Nigeria

In November, 2019, Interchange was appointed to join forces with the Nigerian Post Office (NIPOST), which has the most extensive retail network in the country, in order to offer Western Union’s money transfer services. Western Union is the largest and most experienced money transfer operator in the world, with more than 200,000 agents employed worldwide.

In late February, 2020, a pilot phase started in the Adeola Odeku NIPOST branch in Lagos, with an initial 40 NIPOST staff being trained by the Interchange team. Since then, and despite the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic, three more locations have been opened; in Mushin, Marina and Ikeja, with another 16 openings planned during the first half of 2021.

At present, the NIPOST branches offer only Western Union inbound services, but an application to the Central Bank of Nigeria to allow them to also offer outbound services will be placed shortly.

The NIPOST service offers convenient, secure, and highly accessible locations throughout the whole of Nigeria, and NIPOST customers should encourage all senders to route their payments to these post office branches.
